Neutral Guards are predefined sets of units that defend Neutral Provinces or Locations within provinces, or attack you during events.

Each guard type has four different tiers where higher tiers consist of more powerful armies.

When neutral guards are assigned, the type of the guard is first randomized (for example, either Giants or Cult of the Titan in Titan Fortress), and then the tier of the chosen guard is determined based on strength and ring.

Parameters[]

Strength[]

General number to describe the strength of each tier. Determines the occurrence of the units. Depending on the distance from the closest Stronghold (known as rings), guard tier with appropriate strength is assigned to guard provinces or locations when they are generated:

The maximum strength of province guards can be modified in random map creation settings using the Independents slider:

  • Worthless: 1
  • Harmless: 4
  • Weak: 8
  • Limited: 12
  • Common: No maximum

If no guard tier with matching strength exists, the guard tier with the closest match is picked. For example, the lowest possible strength of Wild Gryphons is 6, which means that you may sometimes face Gryphons guarding a second ring Empty Hills province, even though second ring provinces are normally guarded by guards with strength level between 3 and 5. This is because there exists no tier with strength between 3 and 5 for Wild Gryphons.

Another example, if there's a Dragon's Lair in a first ring province, the only possible guard type is Dragons and the lowest possible strength of Dragons is 10, so it will always be guarded by Tier I Dragons. This information can be used to your advantage: if you know that the province ring level is clearly below the lowest possible strength for the guard type in question, you know for certain that the province or a location is guarded by the tier 1 guard. However, note that the maximum allowed strength of location guards can be slightly higher if the location is discovered on high exploration percentages.

Strength also affects the level of items discovered from the location being guarded. However, note that any items gained directly as spoils of battle from the corpses of the enemy are unaffected by the strength value. They are randomly picked from the individual unit loot tables of all the defeated units.

Minimum Units[]

How many of which units will always be in the guard. Sometimes the number is 0, which means that the particular unit does not appear by default but may be added randomly as an additional unit.

If the unit is part of Allied Forces DLC but you don't have it installed, it will be a basic unit of the race instead, sometimes significantly reducing the difficulty of the guards. For example, a Lizardman Turtleback will be just a Lizardman.

The vanilla game tends to be better balanced without the DLC, and Lizardmen provinces in particular, can be very difficult to conquer early in the game if you're using the DLC. You may also use the Genesis Mode of Fixers Vanilla Patch to revert the guard types to their more balanced versions while still keeping the DLC units in the game.

Average Level[]

The average level of each unit type. There's always a variation of 5, meaning, for example, with average level of 10 the unit may have a level between 7 and 12.

How many additional units may be randomly assigned to the guard.

+ Factor[]

The possibility factor of each unit type being added as an extra unit. For example a unit with possibility factor of 6 has a triple chance to be added compared to a unit with a possibility factor of 2. If a unit has a factor of 0, then it will never be added as an additional unit.

Initiative[]

Since guards lack heroes, they don't gain Initiative from anywhere, but it's determined here. Initiative determines who acts first in battle. Most guards have random variation in their initiative.

Item-%[]

The chance of gaining items as spoils of battle. This can be increased with Looting skill. Note that this is different from the loot you discover from the location itself.

Max Items[]

How many items can be gained as spoils of battle. However, note that due to a bug, no more than 1 item may ever be gained as spoils of battle even if max Items value is more than 1. This is fixed by Fixers Vanilla Patch
